On the road in the Grand Staircase – Day 9 – 22.09.2018
Today’s destination was Escalante, a small town in the midst of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument – or in short: GSENM. The whole region from Zion to the Grand Canyon in the south and up to Capitol Reef in the east is called „Grand Staircase“. So we’ve already been in the Grand Staircase for a couple of days and just continued further. Unterwegs im Grand Staircase – Tag 9 – 22.09.2018
Das Tagesziel war Escalante, ein kleiner Ort mitten im Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument – kurz: GSENM. Wenn man’s genau nimmt, so waren wir eigentlich schon seit dem Zion im „Grand Staircase“ unterwegs und sind jetzt eigentlich nur weiter reingefahren. Heute sollten mehrere Stationen auf dem Plan stehen: Zuerst ging es über die BLM500, auch bekannt als Skutumpah Road, zum Willis Creek und Bull Valley Gorge. Anschließend sind wir ein paar Kilometer die Cottonwood Canyon Road zum Grosvenor Arch gefahren und den Sonnenuntergang haben zu guter Letzt im Kodachrome Basin State Park uns angeschaut. Fairyland Trail im Bryce Canyon NP – Tag 8 – 21.09.2018
Heute sollte es dann richtig in den Bryce Canyon gehen. Der Fairyland Trail stand auf dem Zettel. Bei meinem ersten Besuch in 2017 hatte ich bereits die Standard Wanderungen im inneren Canyon gemacht. Queen’s Garden, Navajo Loop und Peekaboo Loop kannte ich schon. An größeren Wanderungen stand also nur noch die Fairyland Loop aus. Aus dem Jahr zuvor wusste ich, dass es auf 3000 Metern Höhe nachts sehr kalt werden kann, dementsprechend hatte ich mich auch eingerichtet: Dicker Schlafsack und Zwiebelschalenprinzip. Fairyland Trail in Bryce Canyon NP – Day 8 – 21.08.2018
Today was going to be Bryce Canyon Day. On our List was the Fairyland Trail, the only missing „standard“ hike in Bryce. Back in 2017 I already hiked most of the inner hikes like Queens Garden, Navajo Loop or Peekaboo Loop. It can be quite cold during the night in Bryce Canyon at about 9000 ft, I experienced that myself a year earlier. This time I was better prepared: Thick sleeping bag and using the onion principle (several layers of clothes) were supposed to keep me warm. Actually, too warm. Tag 7 – 20.09.2018 – Vom Zion zum Bryce Canyon
Nach drei tollen Tagen im Zion sollte es heute weiter gehen, das Tagesziel war der Bryce Canyon. Aber nicht ohne Zwischenstop: Auf Empfehlung von Daniel (Take A Hike) sind wir zuerst zum Cedar Breaks National Monument gefahren. Weiterhin kommt man auf dem Weg zum Bryce eh noch am Red Canyon vorbei, also haben wir auch dort angehalten. Cedar Breaks National Monument Nach Frühstück und Zeltplatz räumen ging es dann auch schon los. Zuerst ging es quasi zurück zur Interstate, denn der schnellste Weg führt über die I-15. Day 7 – 20.09.2018 – From Zion to Bryce Canyon
After three awesome days we had to leave Zion, today’s target was Bryce Canyon, with two stops inbetween: A friend of mine, Daniel from Take A Hike, recommended Cedar Breaks National Monument. Going from there to Bryce you’ll automatically drive through Red Canyon, where we also did a small hike. Cedar Breaks National Monument Today we didn’t start that early, compared to the last three days it was actually quite late. Packing up everything at the tent site also takes some time. Day 6 – 19.09.2018 – The Subway
This was the day I’ve been waiting for so long. You can’t do the hike to the Subway whenever you want, because you need a Permit for this hike. But the number of permits is actually limited to 80 per day. Permit To get such a Permit, you have to participate in an Online Lottery ($5) about 3 months prior to your visit and you need a bit of luck. The number of lottery permits is limited to 60 per day and of course more than 60 people want to get such a permit. On the website you have the possibility to enter up to 3 days on which you…

Tag 6 – 19.09.2018 – Die Subway
Auf diesen Tag hatte ich mich schon lange vor dem Urlaub gefreut. Die Wanderung zur Subway kann man nicht jedes Mal machen, denn man benötigt ein Permit, also eine Erlaubnis, um hier wandern zu dürfen. Diese Permits sind jedoch begrenzt auf insgesamt 80 Stück pro Tag. Permit Um an ein solches Permit zu kommen, muss man 3 Monate im Voraus an einer Online Lotterie ($5) teilnehmen und ein bisschen Glück haben. Die Plätze sind in der Lotterie auf 60 limitiert und natürlich wollen mehr als 60 Personen so ein Permit haben. Tag 5 – 18.09.2018 – Die Narrows im Zion NP
Während wir am Tag zuvor früh aus dem Zelt mussten, haben wir uns an diesem Morgen etwas mehr Zeit gelassen und in Ruhe gefrühstückt. Anschließend haben wir uns am Park Eingang Neopren Socken, Wasserschuhe und Holzstöcke geliehen. Es ging heute in die Narrows. Der Zion Canyon wurde und wird immer noch durch den Virgin River geformt. Der Hauptcanyon ist relativ breit und wird mit Shuttlebussen befahren. Ganz am Ende ist die Haltestelle „Temple of Sinawava“, dort beginnt dann der sogenannte Riverside Walk. Der Riverside Walk führt 3,5 km (2,2 Meilen) entlang des Virgin Rivers. Day 5 – 18.09.2019 – The Narrows in Zion NP
After getting up quite early the other day, we took a bit more time today and didn’t hurry through our breakfast. Afterwards we went directly to the park entrance and got some Neopren Socks, Watershoes and a wodden hiking stick. Today we went into the Narrows. The Zion Canyon was and still is being shaped by the Virgin River. The Main Canyon is quite wide and Shuttles are driving through the actual canyon. The last stop which is reachable via Shuttle is the „Temple of Sinawava“, where the so called Riverside Walk starts.
